<snip>
BTW - does anyone else have the free 1571 service on Telewest? Is your
ring tone also intermittent, even if there's no message to listen to?

Cheers,

Matthew.

Intermittent dial tone means that there is a divert set up on your line,
i.e. the divert to the voicemail platform when calls are not answered. You
will get a different tone when you have a message.
This happens because the switch you are connected to is a System X switch
and the voicemail is provided off site by a centigram platform, so the
system X just treats the call as an ordinary call divert. If you were in
Birmingham this would not be the case as the centigram interfaces with the
DMS switch via a signalling path allowing the switch to know it can divert
the call to the voicemail platform as if the centigram was another switch. I
could go on for hours but I'm sure your all asleep by now :).
