fan failed, and it got very hot before they noticed.
If you have e.g. lmsensors running you should be able to detect e.g.
case temeperature rises and automate a shutdown perhaps?
I've run at least one machine 24x7 for the last 4 years now (i guess)
and i've not had any problems. A couple of fans have failed (e.g. cpu or
psu) which are easily replaced, and are quite noisey while dying (now if
one died quietly i'd probably be in trouble).
