I really don't think Debian is that hard to install
(not after a few goes anyway).
My advice is to get a current Debian CD and another
recent distro CD. Use the other distro to partition
your disk (Mandrake's is excellent), then quit the
installation and boot into the Debian installation.
Type bf24 at the prompt if you want a 2.4 series
kernel, though it means manually selecting most of
your kernel modules.
Just be sure to initialise all of your partitions, add
some http or ftp apt-sources when you configure apt
and choose the standard vesa vga graphics driver if
you can't find an exact match for your card in the X
configuration section.
Then when it's done, open your /etc/apt/sources.list
in an editor as root and change every instance of the
word stable to the word testing, except for the
security sources, as the security patches are applied
to the testing packages anyway and there is therefore
no testing security packages.
Run apt-get update followed by apt-get dist-upgrade
and you're there.
Thats not that hard is it? Or is it? No it's not, not
really.
Either that or as Aq says use a Debian based distro
live CD like knoppix and use the install to hard disk
util. My only problem with this was that in knoppix I
could only install everything to one partition apart
from swap and I don't know how to swap this around
afterwards; and that some of the unofficial
apt-sources used by knoppix clashed a bit with some
ofthe official debian ones so I sometimes had to wait
a few weeks for stuff to get resolved. You get
hardware detection for free though...
