as snip isn't a html element but an xml one ;-) it could have saved a
char by being <snip/> the space is only required in xhtml elements such
as <br /> so existing html browsers read it as <br> with an attribute of
/ they don't understand so ignore as the specification recommends thus
still rendering a line break.
