Mozilla, Open Office, Gimp, Desktop Games (e.g. all the ones KDE has,

Live CDs - e.g. morphix / knopplix / Sun Java Desktop etc.

Live CDs (no need for hard disk etc)
Mozilla (pop up blocking, junk mail control, tabbed browsing)
Open Office - compability with MS Office e.g. Word, Excel & Power Point

Non-serious but necessary things :

Mplayer
