Yet I've never had any problem with Demon when I went ADSL. Their nice help
desk even helped me sort out my Linux box (which they state they explicitly
don't do). It depends on which techie you get. My only problem with them
was when I was with dial-up and they forgot to cash my cheque, so I had a
year of free access (damn shame!).
I'd say avoid BT/Yahoo. At work we ordered an ADSL connection back in July
and they still haven't managed to send us a welcome pack or a modem, in spite
of numerous phone calls to them. The first one I placed was hilarious; "your
broadband is working" said help desk, "and we notified you by email". "Which
email address?" says I, "blahdeblah.btinternet.com" says help desk. "You
mean that you sent an email to the address registered to the ADSL account?"
Three months on we've received nothing; today they said "Your welcome pack
was posted out last week, as well as a refund for the lack of service. You
should have them by now"; we don't. They also said that they were having
trouble sending us a modem because their system is convinced that we didn't
order one, and (apparently) it is difficult for them to tick the "with modem"
radio button.
