Agreed, except there is also a more expensive option with a fixed IP 
address if you care.

After seeking a number of opinions a non-technical friend of mine has 
gone to Wannadoo which I believe swallowed up Freeserve and they ran Linux.

Didn't Linux Format pick uklinux.net as best ISP? They have an ADSL 
service now.
