Hmm, Good question

IMHO there are two reasons

1. In theory you are verifying who you are if you have registered your key 
with say wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net 

2. If you give someone the other key (They come in pairs) you can then 
communicate with encrypted mails.

The idea being you can send sensitive stuff that in theory only you and the 
receiver can decode.

But I'm sure others will tell you thats a load of old shoe repairers :-)
