I use to work on Digital OpenVMS systems. This story came from an
engineer who had worked as second-line support to their help desk,
specialising in the print and batch job queueing sub-system. New
graduates destined for tech. support jobs were exposed to a wide range
of problems by being used as help-desk cannon-fodder. A caller would
phone in their problem to the newbie who would log a description of the
problem and pass it to the relevant support group. A lot of programmers
had difficulty with the QUE$ system library so my guy was very
accustomed to late nights debugging code that was trying to manipulate
queue entries. He was very surprised therefore to get a call passed to
him about a library routine that he hadn't ever used before. After
spending a significant time searching for something relevant in the 20
volume manual set he realised why he was having so much trouble locating
the queue "Brute" function.
