Hi
I have used SuSE 9.0 pro with Realtek sound (built into the MB) and found
the same problem - I found that it was the source within the properties that
was the problem and I think I used YaST to select the sound source.
Configuring with the correct source solved the problem - there is a list
presented in the properties from which to select the source (I found that
the cdrecord worked in my set-up).
