I heard an interesting report on Radio 4 about a scientific 
investigation of ghost sightings in the cellars under Edinburgh. They 
came to the conclusion that it was due to the vaulted ceilings focussing 
low frequency sound. In trying to make sense of the subconcious 
detection of this stimulus the brain makes stuff up. Typically, 
observers detect changes in temperature or draughts that aren't really 
there. They thought some 'sensitive' people may create shadowy visual 
images that they perceive as ghosts.
