My DVD recorder doesn't do that. Instead, it records onto DVD, but it
can only be played on that DVD player until you "finalise" the disc. I
have been assuming that "recording" just sticks mpegs on the disc, and
then "finalisation" does whatever dvdauthor does to turn an mpeg into
a DVD image...
