I thought nscd was just a caching daemon, useful if you do network 
lookups (e.g. ldap/samba etc); but doesn't actually do much else.

I'd have thought that you probably need to ensure you have a correct 
/etc/nsswitch.conf, and stuff in /etc/pam.d may be affected.

I'll say no more, as I'm a bit murky in this area,
