Thanks all for the posts.  I have puzzled over them and done the
suggested Googling.  I discovered this (using VNC & putty for Win)
which helped clarify some of the concepts:

Clearest explanation I've seen, and so now I can access my home Linux
box from work.  Yes, believe it or not, this is sometimes useful to me.

I'm still puzzled.  There are packages like GoToMyPC which can do all
this, but they are not FLOSS.  Why hasn't someone gone to town making
open VNC/SSH software useful to the average eedjit?
