Chris,

Thank you for both of your responses. We've managed to solve the 
immediate problem by rebooting everything. One little-used computer (and 
therefore with a long uptime) might have been the culprit.

Thanks for the advice on disabling the master browser function, which 
I'll try if it happens again. At least then we'll know which machine to 
examine.

Yes, you are right that we should be setting up a Samba server to set up 
and manage the domain. That is our next linux aim. Courtesy of Jono and 
Advantage West Midlands I went on a Samba course before Christmas which 
helpted.

We actually have two separate networks here running over the same wires. 
The student network has linux file/proxy server. There is a linux 
firewall as well and an e-smith server for the staff network.
