Ah, bells are ringing very loudly on this.  I have vague memories of
reading about it and experiencing the very same.  Try knocking out the
various KDE sound servers one at a time. I think that's how I sorted
it.  There is one of them that does indeed grab the sound output -
apart from the CD that is - when it starts but does not actually do
anything with it.
