Ah-ha! A bit of clarity. I thought, surely it does this for me? And
indeed it does: "grep swapon /etc/init.d/*" shows

/etc/init.d/mountall.sh:        swapon -a 2> /dev/null

So I tried "sudo swapon -a", and got

swapon: /dev/hda5: Invalid argument

"swapon /dev/hda5" does the same. So, what's up with that?
