I think I might know the answer to this one, however it might not be a
solution.

I have a USB external 200GB HDD which works fine. however I get error messages
in the log file 'DEVPATH not set' plus I have what I would call a ghost
folder/drive the entry's read;

/media
--------->/cdrecorder
--------->/floppy
--------->/USB-200GB
--------->/USB-200GB_1

I read on Google that this is a known issue with USB & Linux in general, from
what I understand the HAL daemon constantly keeps reassigning the drive or
something, apparently the only fix is to have a USB PCI card (I have no idea
why) the error happens with cable ones attached to your motherboard and
on-board ones too!

I haven't lost any data yet and don't appear to have any connection problems
other than the error messages which I just ignore.

Of course it could be your stick is on its way out?
