Stage 1, I presume?

The performance improvement over running 386 binaries (debian, FC) or
pentium (SuSE) is usually worth the wait.  Once you have at least 1
machine running , install & configure distcc. ebuilds will then get
faster the more machines you have.

To get the best possible performance, make sure you get your CFLAGS
right.  On my athlon-xp I use CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe" (the
- -mcpu flag will not give the best possible optimisation for your system).
