[Wolves] weird X in Ubuntu

On my updated daily Hoary box I've been getting a 'odd' X start-up bug.

My PC is a Dell Dimension 2400, with the E127FP 17inch monitor.

On booting into X my monitor displays the error, 'unable to display 
video mode'.

I hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 with the idea of editing xorg.conf. It was then by a 
serendipity that I hit Ctrl+Alt+F7 where I find the Gnome login running 
at 1280X1080 at 75htz.  Any ideas how to fix this so it works from first 
boot???
