Sounds sensible to me given the low spec of the machine.
Actually most servers in the Linux community are purely text based.
(Linux gods don't need pretty pictures :-P )

I'm puzzled too? in your second paragraph your saying he doesn't want GUI then
in the last paragraph I read it that he does, which is it me old China?
As you know Suse has a text mode install, my best advice (based on a little
experience) is just get the base system on, as little as possible, then build
it up.
I cant give you a reason why but I've found if you try and stick all the
packages on during the install it falls over.
I had the same experience at the weekend my daughter Hannah wanted Linux on a
Toshiba 4090CDS laptop (She likes the games) every Distro I tried fell over
all the disks are good I've used them loads of times but they refused to load
at about 80% .
I did a minimal install of Mandrake and everything was fine I just added
packages one at a time and all was well. Stupid I know but then so are
computers ;-)
