Using a /home on a seperate partition is generally how it's always done.
Depending on your setup, you may need to backup other areas before
wiping stuff (e.g. /srv/www, /var/spool/XXXX ). Personally I always keep
a copy of /etc, as that's where most of my admin scripts etc tend to
live (e.g. customised firewall scripts, network settings, X
configuration etc)
