This is pre-XP Microsoft Windows - I know what my money's on... ;)

Dig out your Linux install CD after you install 2000 and it nukes GRUB.

Boot directly from it and at the boot prompt enter 'linux
root=/dev/xxx' where xxx is the partition you installed linux onto, eg
hda2 or whatever.  (at least I /think/ the kernel on the disk is
called linux - I don't have a CD with me and can't remember - If linux
doesn't work have a shuftie around the help screens at boot to find
the rescue kernel)

Then run sudo grub-install from a console window.  GRUB should
magically resurrect itself.  :)
