Yeah I've used minicom it should be loaded on most systems by default if not 
it should be on your distro CD, DVD or Repo, you'll need to start it as root;

root at xxxx # minicom -s

this will allow you to configure it after that you can start it with;

simon at xxx minicom

within minicom type A
then type Z

If I can set it up any idiot can -LOL
