When I edit initab I tend to always use Kate.  But, any text editor
will edit it just as long as you are logged in as SU.  You will not be
able to save any changes otherwise as it's a main system file and has
root 'write' permissions only...normally.  If your x server is
complaining then it sounds like it has become corrupt somewhere along
the line.  Surely it would still start up the x server even if the
nvidia drivers were not as they should be?
