I think gstreamer is probably the way to go in the long term but if your 
friend also wants to watch DVDs and has problems then in Hoary it may be 
easier to resolve them by removing the gstreamer components and 
replacing them by xine. I'll be having another look at gstreamer when I 
upgrade to 5.10.

There is an alternative solution to the MP3 problem - use Ogg Vorbis. 
It's free and included.
