A proxy connects to (external) services on your behalf. An example is
Squid which is a web proxy. Your browser connects to Squid which then
requests the web page from the 'net.
This gives a few possibilities:
1/ Commonly accessed static pages and images are fetched once and stored
within the cache on the proxy server.
2/ It is possible to impose restriction on the web pages accessed by
telling the proxy to redirect certain requests (see dansguardian and
squidguard)
