[Wolves] 1394, charecter devices, dv cameras

Hey all,

can some one help me with my camera please?
I'm trying to get the footage of it from last night. can i mount a character 
device? or is it only block devices? how'd I get the video form the cam?
I set permisions for the firewire port so i can read and write it. then I 
tried to mount it, using vfat (ain't too sure if this is the right fs), this 
failed saying it ain't a block device. 

So how'd I go about this?

BTW I really enjoyed last night.
