well on my system lets go through them
boot >boot images are kept here
dev>hardware devices here
etc>config files here
home>home dirs here
lib>libs here
media> media is mounted here
proc>unsure but i think that it's filesytem related
root> root's dir
sbin>super users progs here
selinux> files for security enhanced linux
tmp>temp dir
usr>programs etc
var> for service files, www,ftp,mail,etc
hope this helps.
this is no way complete either. there are important sub dirs too.
but i havn't time. sorry.
