Ensure you have the usb mass storage driver - depending what kernel 
you're using it might be called something helpful like 'usb-storage'.

Once this, and perhaps the 'sd' module are loaded, you should see useful 
messages in 'dmesg'.

Hope that sort of helps, I've not had to fiddle with this stuff since 
ubuntu-ising.
