Oh come on. You comparing the manhandling of 5 CDs and the ensuing fun with
clicking Applications --> Add/Remove --> <Software category> --> <Software
product> --> Tick --> OK. ?

I would assert that having many CDs is orders of magnitude more confusing
for users than having a nice gui with a list of software to install from
some magic website.
