the su command is use to swap users.  su by itself is to give access
to root (admin in windows terms).  Ubuntu by default uses sudo (this
command give temporary access to root) this makes it harder to mess up
your system.  Root can do a lot of damage.

Increasing the size wouldn't hurt the norm recommended in most
tutorials is about 5-10 gig.
