vi[m]: type in /asdasdasdas (/ followed by some random string) and it
will unset what you last searched for.

I don't think Apache would be too keen on allowing you access to get
to a directory through ones that are protected; but I may be wrong.
Can you not remap the unprotected directory to e.g. /foo instead of
/some/where/protected/foo ?
