This makes it sound like either the partition table is damaged or the
filesystem itself is VERY badly corrupt (which implies that any data
recovered must be regarded as suspect).

You could try ubuntu (reads/writes NTFS no problem), otherwise you
need to look at a specialist service (Vogon?).  The important thing at
this stage is not to make matters worse, If you have any doubts, DON'T
TRY IT!
