[Wolves] Sessions error

I've just spent half an hour trying to figure out why a couple of php 
applications were broken (Gallery , A.N.Other), not letting
you log in.
I've 'fixed' it by changing the permissions on /var/lib/php/session/ to 
allow 777 permissions (owner is root, group apache).

What should the permissions for this group be and what can have broken 
it in the first place?
I've had a auto update (its FC6 btw) and installed 'Motion' a sec cam 
application with its own webserver.
