Hi.
For what it's worth I actually had a similar problem a couple of months ago. Tried all I knew. Nothing worked.

What I tried if I remember correctly. created a new user . chown old /home to new user. delete old username  and recreate  and chown again.

Be warned ...  you could be burned.


By the way I am happily "linuxing" from Accra in Africa.
