Hey Mo
Another option is to use the Nautilus side bar on the
left. At the moment it shows either Information or
Places, right? Well click the drop-down box and one of
the options is Tree, to give you a tree view in your
side bar.
And while not ideal perhaps, it means you don't need
another application to do the job.

You are right it is not ideal. However, I have installed Gnome Commander and have to say for me it will do the job admirably. However, as you may know I do help a few people with Linux and they are not advanced users. It should be OK for them to open two windows and drag 'n' drop file etc across.
