[Wolves] Stop frame animation in Linux?

Hi folks,
Has anyone done any stop frame animation using Linux? If so what software did
you use? Any pitfalls? etc.

Ideally, what I'd like to do initially is take a .jpg, use that as frame one
then slightly alter it, use as frame 2 and so on.

Sound reasonable?
