Just an observation on why Win98 may not be a good idea: Microsoft no 
longer 'support' it. This doesn't matter much but it has had the effect 
of stopping anyone else supporting it either, including anti-virus and 
firewall providers.

I often use a laptop just so I can sit somewhere else 'to be sociable'. 
If you had a server elsewhere, then a minimal 'X terminal' solution 
might meet your needs.
