This is how I use JOSM (version 484)
1/ take your GPS trace, convert to GPX and upload to OSM.
2/ Start JOSM
3/ Open the GPX file you uploaded in step 1.
4/ If the trace is from a long trip, zoom in on an area about 1 - 2 km
square.
5/ Download the existing data and GPS traces for the area.
6/ Click on "Draw nodes" (3rd button on LHS). Click the mouse where yoou
want to draw your first node, move to next location, click, repeat until
done marking the way.
7/ Click on the select tool (2nd button on LHS), ensure the way you just
drew is selected.
8/ Use the presets menu to describe your way (a footpath is a type of road).
9/ Repeat 6,7 and 8 until done, then upload the file back to OSM.
YMMV
