Ah, sorted finally. I was typing in su mousepad when it should indeed
have been sudo mousepad. It was one of those times when you just
don't see exactly what you are typing. Anyway, I managed to get
mousepad running as su and edited xorg.conf succesfully. I now have a
nice none shimmering screen to view. While I was about it I also
edited the gdm files to allow me to log in as root if I so desire (not
often but sometimes and I like to have the choice). This Xfce isn't
too bad really :-)
