Its possible also that it has stretched the desktop across multiple 
displays, ie your monitor and your tv. does your mouse seem to go off 
the screen on one side or top/bottom?

I seem to remember that if two displays have different resolutions then 
you cant have compiz enabled. Nvidia drivers come with a graphical 
configuration utility (nvidia-settings if memory serves).

Dont panic though, its going to be one of those annoying "easy when you 
know how" things by the sounds of it.
