that's 720p a nice standard res to be using on the tv

is 1920×1080 available? because your tv probably has the hardware to
scale that res neatly.

you could also try 1360x768 @ 50hz

isn't there an option to alter the screen setup in the software?
(apart from altering the xconfig I mean)  XBMC (which runs on modded
xboxes of which we have two in the house as media centres) has options
to setup the screen to get rid of the overscan which is only really
needed on silly old crt's.
