Hi Ian,
You probably need to set your network to "bridged". If you're using vmware player, it's in the Devices menu of the machine, available when it's running.

Hi Ian,
How is the networking on the VM setup? also which VM are you using?
Can the guest OS resolve the DNS name of the server/domain controller
correctly?
