[Wolves] OT? Open source house alarms

Hi folks,

I've been thinking about house alarms recently and wondered if anyone had any
experience or knowledge of homebrew house alarms, especially ones that use
open source software and/or hardware. Ideally I'd like a portable and easily
extendable.

It seems that it might be reasonably easy to do with a mix of electronics (the
Arduino platform springs to mind), and a few cheap sensors and maybe ones from 
left over alarm systems, and Linux.
