It sounds like you've got a mismatch somehow. gcc is the bit that 
compiles the code into something the computer can read.

Make sure your installation is up to date, including the kernel, and 
google says you probably need build-essential package installed too for 
the proper gcc. I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu, sorry.

There are many more knowledgeable than I who will be able to advise you 
further if that doesn't help.
