[Wolves] How does push email work?

I've been trying to work out today how smart phones such as the
BlackBerry do push email. I know that it requires extra hardware in
the mobile operator's data centre and their cooperation. Beyond that
I'm stumped. Is it as simple as an SMS with a particular structure
that gets intercepted by the phone's OS, or is there some deeper GSM
magic going on?

I can't find the right keywords to get past the marketing material.
