Is the white screen a fading kind of white screen, like it fades to white?

I had a similar symptom with a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop which was 
down to the edid of he screen not being strictly correct with its 
resolution. It had disabled it and was selecting the av out as the main 
screen. It would still drop to a terminal with alt-f1 or f2. It needed a 
custom edid in the end.
