This reminds me of the first class I taught.

A HND class in php/mysql where everyone in the class was well versed
in jargon (FNF etc) but couldn't develop a database that worked :)

Pete, you're doing things the right way by designing the thing and
then discovering it doesn't work and finding out why that is.  It's
better than understanding from day one that keys are required but not
understanding why or asking anyone.
