I think a lot of people are too scared to own up and admit that Dave. I even wonder at this 'soldering bits on' lark as well? And it's not very practical with them great big hulking cables attached to them. Mine was a gift, I paid £7.00 for a case, the HDMI cable was about £3.00 luckily I had a 32GB SD card but they're not cheap.
As you say I can get a Dell Optiplex 745 sff Dual Core 3.0Ghz, 2GB, 80GB with XP Pro for £55 the hardware alone would blow a Pi out the water.
